MCA Guided Tour
Private tour rates include admission to the MCA and complimentary coat check. Tours are
approximately one hour long.

About the MCA
One of the nation's largest facilities devoted to the art of our time, the Museum of Contemporary Art
(MCA) offers exhibitions of the most thought-provoking art created since 1945. The MCA documents
contemporary visual culture through painting, sculpture, photography, video and film, and
performance. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, the MCA boasts a gift store, bookstore,
restaurant, 300-seat theater, and a terraced sculpture garden with a great view of Lake Michigan.

CURRENT AND UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS
Production Site: The Artist's Studio Inside -Out
February 6 - May 30, 2010
For centuries the artist's studio has been one of the most important and
necessary aspects at the center of an artist's creative, professional, and social
life. The tradition of representing the studio space in art extends back to the
Renaissance era, and Production Site demonstrates how artists working
today are continuing to consider the studio as a subject of their work.
Presenting major installations by 13 emerging and established international
artists, Production Site provides insight into how artists are thinking about and using a space that has
changed dramatically in relevance and function during the past 40 years. This exhibition reveals how
today’s artists are representing the studio in works of art that range from images and objects, to
performances and environments, to give a better understanding of the role of the artist’s studio today.
Artists in the show include: Justin Cooper, Tacita Dean, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Rodney
Graham, William Kentridge, Kerry James Marshall, Bruce Nauman, John Neff, Amanda Ross-Ho, Deb
Sokolow, Andrea Zittel, and Nikhil Chopra, who performs live in the galleries on February 9 and 10.
This exhibition is accompanied by numerous educational programs, and is organized by MCA Curator
Dominic Molon. Production Site is presented as part of Studio Chicago, a year-long collaborative
project that focuses on the artist’s studio through October 2010.

Rewind: 1970s to 1990s, Works from the MCA Collection
March 13 - September 5, 2010
During its forty-year history, the MCA has distinguished itself with
groundbreaking exhibitions that have contributed substantially to the
evolving history of contemporary art. These exhibitions have, in turn,
stimulated the museum and its supporters to acquire important and
often numerous pieces by these artists. Rewind presents concentrations
of work by artists whom the MCA has collected in depth, or whose pieces in the collection are
definitive examples of their singular aesthetic. Rewind focuses on works from these particular decades
to show how the groundbreaking work from the recent past is only now becoming historicized for its
critical take on art institutions, the construction of identity, and new approaches to photography in the
late-20th century. It includes works by Vito Acconci, Richard Artschwager, Matthew Barney, Alfredo
Jaar, Mike Kelley, Sharon Lockhart, Richard Long, Richard Prince, Lorna Simpson, Tony Tasset, and
Gillian Wearing. This exhibition is organized by Julie Rodrigues Widholm, MCA Pamela Alper
Associate Curator.

Alumni Seminar Series
Join us for the Dartmouth Club of Chicago Alumni Seminar: The Rise of Modern China: Threat or Opportunity?

The debate over whether China’s rapid emergence as a major world power is a threat to the U.S. is far from settled. Those who see a threat emphasize the non-democratic nature of China’s political system, its increased defense spending, and its more active foreign policy as reasons the U.S. should be concerned. Those who see an opportunity emphasize the economic possibilities of China and its efforts to reassure its neighbors and the world that it seeks a “peaceful rise.” In this forum, Government Professors David Kang and Martin Dimitrov will discuss China’s domestic and foreign policies and their implications for the US security and commercial interests.

Alumni Seminar - American Hegemony
American Hegemony, Global Intervention and Democratization with Dirk Vandewalle and Misagh Parsa:
In the 21st Century, the United States as the remaining superpower has the ability to singlehandedly intervene on behalf of its economic and political interests. But, ironically, it may be unable to control the actual outcome of its interventions. US policies to promote democracy may similarly face challenges from pre-existing social forces within those countries and cultures. In this seminar, we will focus on when the US should intervene unilaterally in global economic issues and to promote democratic institutions in other countries. What interests should guide how policymakers deal with the threat of or actual political or economic instability abroad? Have past interventions taught us any lessons about the viability of certain kinds of intervention - and should those guide us in the future?

Dartmouth at the Movies II
It's that time of year again!!

Join us every Tuesday night around 8PM at the 4th Annual Chicago Outdoor Film Festival (See info below). As long as it doesn't rain, I will be saving us a spot starting around 6PM. JUST LOOK FOR THE GREEN & WHITE BALLOONS! Bring a lawn chair if you have one (or a blanket) and beverages. Pop corn is free and I'll try to bring some munchies!

This Tuesday (7/15): It Happened One Night (1938)

Starring: Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert

A screwball comedy kicks off the film festival and in this All-Star summer, it's the perfect first pitch. It's also a first time at the festival for film greats Gable, Colbert and Director Frank Capra, all Oscar winners for this movie. Colbert, a rich, spoiled heiress, takes off on the road to meet up with the love of her life, or so she thinks, until she meets up with unemployed newspaperman, Clark Gable. This road picture is a perfect way to celebrate the Centennial of the coast to coast crossing of the automobile.

***

This years festival celebrates the pioneers of transportation. It is the centennial of flight and the anniversary of the first successful transcontinental trip by automobile.

The film festival remembers the achievements made memorable by actor extraordinaire, Rod Steiger. Join the City of Chicago as we honor him by presenting his Oscar winning performance, In the Heat of the Night.

Steiger died July 9, 2002. Sidney Poitier called Steiger the quintessential American actor, hugely gifted and well trained a very unusual combination.

The Chicago Outdoor Film Festival is dedicated to the memory of Gene Siskel. Siskel is considered one of the most revered and influential movie critics of all time. Contemporaries say that along with Roger Ebert, Siskel brought film criticism into the mainstream, legitimizing it as an important aspect of contemporary journalism.

Once again, the festival will showcase short films done by Chicago area amateur and professional filmmakers. In addition, each week, a Scrappy, Mr. Mcgoo, Three Stooges, Charley Chase or Buster Keaton comic short will precede the feature film.

The Chicago Outdoor Film Festival 2003 celebrates the centennial of the birth of Curly Howard, arguably the most popular of the Three Stooges. His real name was Jerome Lester Horwitz. His hilarious improvisations and classic catch-phrases of "N'yuk- n'yuk-n'yuk!" and "Wooo-wooo-wooo!" have established him as a great American cult hero.

Charley Chases comic abilities went far beyond his on-camera antics: he was also a talented director, screenwriter and even a songwriter. Chase is probably best remembered for his supporting role in Laurel and Hardys 1933 feature, Sons of the Desert. He portrayed an obnoxious conventioneer.

ALUMNI SEMINAR - "Facing Mecca: Beyond Orientalism"
Lecture by Professors Kevin Reinhart and Marlene Heck

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. Orientalism, a particularly western and pejorative interpretation of Islamic religion, history, art and literature, frames and obscures much of our understanding of the subject. Events such as the bombing of the World Trade Center lead to a flurry of media manifestations of this phenomenon. They virtually ignore the enormous body of modern scholarship, which has carefully refined a deeper understanding of Islam (the religion), its associated history, culture and politics, and its modern face in the United States. The resulting misinterpretations influence public opinion, political will, and the objective use of knowledge about Islam by policy makers. Professor of Religion Kevin Reinhart talks about Islam with great clarity amid these tendencies of misinterpretation. Marlene Heck is an architect, a professor of history and art historian whose appreciation of the world of Islamic art gives this seminar a deeper understanding of this topic.

Second City Outing
Get ready to laugh your you-know-what off with your fellow alums at Second City! We will be going to see the showing of Thank Heaven It Wasnt 7/11 on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002 at 8pm at The Second City Mainstage (See review below). MORE IMPORTANTLY, Al Samuels '88 is one of the performers!! Not only will we (hopefully) get a chance to speak with him about what it's like to be a Second City player, but Jamie Lust '97 also is studying and performing improv there and can chat with us about his experiences.

While the show starts at 8PM, let's meet at 7:30PM so we can be seated together. Also, if anyone is interested in doing dinner, please call me at 773-206-5602 and we can coordinate.

*****

Thank Heaven It Wasnt 7/11 moves from the Oval Office to the Middle East; from airplanes to el-trains - to discover an America changed by tragedy. Except that corporations are still consumed by ego and greed, divisive racism and bigotry runs rampant throughout the country, and the political elite continues to value rhetoric more dearly than freedom of speech. Otherwise... everythings changed.

CCM's performances have been critically acclaimed for their artistic excellence, program diversity and distinguished guest artists.
